Dr. Alexander Foster was born and raised here in San Diego, and after graduating from medical school as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society at the University of Southern California, left for the Pacific Northwest to complete his surgical residency at the University of Washington. He stayed in Seattle an extra year to undertake rigorous subspecialty training in cornea transplant.
Dr. Foster is comfortable with a broad array of advanced surgical techniques. He performs all types of keratoplasty, including traditional (full-thickness) penetrating grafts, anterior lamellar grafts, and endothelial grafts. He is the only surgeon in North County performing the most advanced form of transplant, the Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty. This is considered the “crown jewel” of contemporary corneal surgery and is the most cutting-edge treatment for conditions such as Fuchs dystrophy.
He performs a large volume of LASIK and cataract surgery, and is conversant in all modern lens implants including the latest generation of multifocal and extended depth of focus lenses. Options in modern cataract surgery can be overwhelming as a patient – Dr. Foster will be happy to help you navigate this process and design a plan to achieve your optimum results.
He also handles other complex anterior segment techniques including scleral-fixated intraocular lenses, pterygia, iris repair, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and is frequently referred these cases by local colleagues.
In his spare time, Dr. Foster is very much a typical southern Californian – he enjoys surfing, beach volleyball, and spending time with his wife Laura (an emergency physician), their son Reid, and their dog Roy. He looks forward to perfecting your vision at Davies Eye.
