Cataract and Lens Replacement

Cataracts are a normal part of growing older; about half of Americans older than 65 have some degree of clouding of the lens.  As you get older, the natural lens, located behind the iris in your eye, may gradually begin to get “cloudy” and interfere with light and images getting to your retina. As the lens becomes cloudier, your vision slowly becomes more blurred. If allowed to remain, the cataract will progress to the point where there will be a complete loss of vision in your eye. Surgery is the only way to remove a cataract. Last year approximately 2.7 million Americans underwent cataract surgery.

Some of the symptoms of cataracts are:

  • Slightly Blurred vision (like lookng through a cloudy piece of glass)
  • Light sensitivity (ei. sensitivity to lights at night)
  • Glare, halos
  • Colors seem faded (diminished brightness of colors)
  • Poor night vision

You might be under he impression to wait until your cataract grows to the point of interfering significantly with your vision quality before taking  action. The best thing to do is to continue to visit your eye doctor regularly to monitor the cataract’s progress. Cataracts not only effect your vision quality but can interfere with your vision at a level where it is unsafe to drive, or difficult to preform everyday tasks. If you can relate to any of the symptoms mentioned above, then it’s time to discuss a cataract solution with Dr. Davies. The only way to restore clear vision is to remove the clouded lens. Replace it with a clear, permanent implant called an intraocular lens (Also known as an IOL).

Choosing the Right Premium Lens for You

Choosing the right lens implant to replace the natural clouded lens during cataract surgery is important. The artificial lens, is a clear lens that requires no care and becomes a permanent part of the eye. There are two main types of IOL to consider: monofocal and multifocal intraocular lenses. Monofocal lenses have a single zone of clear focus, usually set for excellent distance vision, but require the use of reading glasses for near tasks, like reading or sewing. Others, called multifocal lenses, have multiple zones of clear vision, providing both distance and near correction.

Monofocal Lens

The monofocal intraocular lens will correct a cataract patient’s distant or near vision depending on the power of the implant. The recommendation is to select an implant that will improve the patient’s distance vision completely so that after the cataract surgery, reading glasses are the only thing required.

If your Cataract Surgeon In Florida doctor decides that a monofocal lens is the best vision correction for you then your ophthalmologist can implant different powered IOLs in the eye during your cataract surgery, this procedure is called “monovision”. Monovision can be achieved with contact lenses, refractive surgery or intraocular lens.

Patient’s who choose to have premium Multifocal Lens Implant will experience improved distance and reading vision, creating less dependency on reading glasses. After one refractive vision consultation with Dr. Davies at Davies Eye Center, he will discuss the options and types of implants that will best restore your vision and lifestyle.
